If you missed this week’s Fireside Chat, Justin was on a roll. He has been listening to a lot of Tony Robbins lately – two books in a row in fact. If you know Tony Robbins, you know that’s motivation on steroids. We competed in Branson last weekend, and he insisted on listening the whole way down and back. So, naturally – I got an education and motivation from Tony Robbins as well.

The book was great. In fact, it’s the book of the month for those who participate in the Next Gen Academy book club. “Unleash the Power Within”. In the book, Robbins talks about how we are literally the only thing standing in our own way.

Why is it that two people can be born into families with issues (drugs, physical and emotional abuse, alcoholism, etc.) and one person can be damaged for life by it while the other fully overcomes it? There is a calculated reason in life why one person can fall victim to the things he or she grew up dealing with as a child while another can be the CEO of a company or the pastor of a church. The only difference between the two is that one believed he was capable of more while the other believed his past determined his future.

So where do you stand? Does your past determine your future? Have you ever:

  • Been fired from a job?
  • Been a bad boss?
  • Had families leave the program because they didn’t like you?
  • Had athletes quit because they didn’t like your coaching?
  • Gotten a bad review?

I’ve had almost all of those things happen to me before. Those things might break the average person and make them believe they’re not capable of being successful. (If you know me, you know I’m too stubborn to let one of those things be my demise.) At the same time, sometimes those things take personal growth and a lot of work.

So, will you be the gym owner that looks at things in the past and decides you’re not capable of doing better? Or will you be the owner that looks at the things of the past and appreciates the challenges you’ve overcome to get where you are today?
