Do you use video replays with your athletes to make corrections? After each competition, we cast the video of the routine up to the TV in the gym and walk through the areas that need work. We’ll talk about the judges comments in each area, and what we will need to work on moving forward. The visual correction really helps the athletes to see what they may have done wrong and how to make corrections moving forward. 

 

This would be helpful in business too…if it were possible to see things that clearly that is. If we could just watch our reactions to angry parents, entitled staff or unreasonable athletes – maybe we could make our own corrections and do better moving forward. Sometimes as owners, we need to be called out on our behavior – whether that’s just as clear as the example above or as simple as saying, “Danielle, you said you were going to do that and you didn’t.” 

 

“Do the best you can until you know better. Once you know better, do better.” 

 

That’s from a line in a book I read last week, and it was convicting. If I know better…but I do something anyway, then my business will never BE better, right? Yet, over and over, we find ourselves making the same mistakes. 

 

I recently was talking to one of our Academy members about why I love and appreciate one-on-one coaching calls. As business coaches, we not only hold gym owners accountable for the things they say they’re going to do, but we help keep them out of ruts.

 

For example: 

 

  • How many years have you waited until the last second to finish that annual All Star packet? 
  • Have you ever found yourself submitting payroll 5 minutes before the deadline for direct deposit to take effect on the right date? 
  • Am I the only one that had an event creep up on me just to find myself dumping money into ads trying to make sure I can cover my tracks since I didn’t market weeks prior? (We used to host a lot of “last minute clinics” that had been planned for months but I had dropped the ball on looking into the future when marketing.)

 

The problem for most owners is that they’ll continue doing these things over and over and over. They’ll know something is coming up, but it’s not an emergency. So, they’ll put it on the back burner and put out the fires they’re currently encountering. When that’s done, they’re tired. They’re too tired in fact to work ahead. So, tomorrow, they make a plan to work ahead and find themselves in the same vicious cycle over and over.
