Do you know how many people want to be in your shoes right now? For years I did a job I enjoyed. I did public relations for the Air Force where I got to make videos, write articles and interview people, escort senators and congressmen, and basically be a party planner for major events. It was sort of a dream job for me – someone a little squirrely who loves starting new projects and seeing my creation come to life.

When I was in grad school, I had to write a business plan for a future business. Don’t be jealous I got that experience. I spent $12,000 on grad school and felt like learning to write a business plan might have been my only relatable skill. I remember writing the business plan for a cheer and dance studio. I was in heaven imagining what my life could be like if I could turn my passion into a business.

I never thought that would be a reality though.

I was actually in grad school so I was a more desirable candidate when I applied for a commissioning. My life was on a totally different path.

If you had told me there was any chance I could be full-time at my own gym just a year later, I would have never believed you.

Eleven years in and I’m not sure I think back to those years often enough. I’m grateful for our coaching clients as they often remind me of the stages of business we’ve been through. I get to put myself in their shoes often and remember what life was like. I forget what it was like before I owned the gym though.

I wonder if you have too. Do you think back to life before you owned a gym? Did you have a dream (even if you never told anyone else about it?) Did other people tell you not to open a gym? That’s the most disappointing piece of advice I see on Facebook. Ask me if I’d open a gym all over again.

I’d do it in a heartbeat.
